The connection to history from novel:

The woman's suffarge, where woman stood up for their rights, is the main part and effected part of the character's family, and that made the story. 

There was also great war, which also effected the character's family, by some of the character's family actually going to a great war. But, they were going to help the red cross in that great war, which is now known as World War 1.
